Donna Beverly - Acrylic, Watercolor, Graphite drawings

Artist: Donna Beverly
Medium: Acrylic, Watercolor, Graphite drawings

Artist Bio:

Vision is my beginning point, as I rarely work from memory or imagination. While exploring any subject matter - a patch of warm light or long cast shadows upon the earth, a fence line escaping into the distance, a favorite vase of flowers - something will stop my search and grab my attention. Feeling no obligation nor desire to record the world as it is seen, the fun now begins. Utilizing distortion and simplification, I begin wrapping the objects with a string-like line, identifying shadows and lights with ink in my sketchbook. Movement is a constant element in my artwork; the drama of the wind across the landscape, like the dancer on a stage, always influences my images. Once the image is redrawn in watercolor pencil or graphite line on the canvas and the focus of the painting is established, I can then get lost in my world of color and the dance of the paintbrush. Studying color theory gives me the impetus to utilize color as a means of personal expression and play. Matisse stated, “Color was not given to us in order that we imitate Nature. It was given to us so that we can express our emotions.”
